Basic Description:
The ELI Adaptive Tech Program is designed to help families make living and learning environments more user friendly for their very young children with special needs. This is accomplished by training ELI staff and clients to design and implement communication and play strategies that are compatible with the individual needs and abilities of each child and family. In partnership with families, the Adaptive Tech Program will use a play based assessment designed to help families and staff recognize the ways that each individual child expresses him or herself. Through the assessment process the team will identify the approaches that best reinforce learning, social interaction, and fun for this child and family. Finally, existing toys and appliances will be adapted and technologies employed, to help families facilitate their child's expression and learning. These will be available to try out, and then if found useful, parents will be given suggestions as to where resources for such systems may be found. Some toys may be available for checking out to families. Choices of appliances and technology will be considered with the added intention of laying a foundation for expanding upon and adapting the system for future settings.
